Confirmed: Manchester United will sign £28m La Liga Midfielder Today
The Daily Mail have confirmed that Manchester United will sign Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera for £28m today.
Herrera has become new manager Louis Van Gaal’s first signing at Old Trafford, moving to Manchester for a sizeable fee. Described as “intelligent and stylish,” the player was originally subject to a £24m bid by ousted coach David Moyes last summer.
Moyes had refused to meet the £28m buyout clause in Herrera’s contract, but as the player has continued to impress, United have decided the time is right to move for the youngster.
Herrera’s buyout clause was in fact set to rise to £32m on July 1, and Manchester United’s executive vice-chairman is understood to have wanted to avoid that price rise at all costs.
Herrera, part of Spain’s Olympic squad in London 2012 was a team mate of Manchester United players Juan Mata and David De Gea with the Spain U21s.
This season, he helped to propel Bilbao to an impressive fourth place in La Liga.
