According to reports from the Metro, Arsenal are closing in on their first transfer deal of the summer.

Arsene Wenger has opened talks with Bayer Leverkusen for midfielder Lars Bender, seen by some as an ideal replacement for the under performing Mikel Arteta.

Arsenal will reportedly have a massive £70m war chest this transfer window, and the 24-year old Bender will cost approximately £17m.

Arteta has endured a difficult season, and there are significant doubts about the Spaniards ability to fulfill the demands of a big club such as Arsenal in the long term.

Bender, a tough-tackling midfielder would add some much needed steel to the Gunners midfield, and is considered by many a wonderful prospect for the future.

Manchester United and Real Madrid have also registered their interest in the young German, but it appears that Wenger might have had a word in the players ear just in time.

What do you think? Would this be a good signing for Arsenal? Does Arteta need to be replaced?
