Champions League Race – Our Summary and Predictions
The draw for the semi-final of the 2014 Champions League has selected Real Madrid taking on Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid taking on Chelsea in their bids to reach the final. Both matches will be played on April 22 & 23, and April 29 & 30.
Bayern beat Arsenal 2-0 at Emirates and drew 1-1 at the Nou Camp making it 3-1 overall
In the Quarter Final, they drew 1—1 with Manchester United at Old Trafford and won 3-1 at home, making it 4-2 on aggregate.
In the semi-final, Bayern Munich and are now placed at 6/4 to win the competition by Paddy Power. They face tough opposition Real Madrid and as such, despite being favourites, they are given short odds of 5/4 to be eliminated prior to the final on the Bookmakers site.
The Spanish giants were being backed in to advance with ease when they go away to face German opposition this week after a clinical 3-0 victory at the Bernabeu. However, they faced a scare as Jurgen Klopp’s Dortmund team fought hard to level things and achieved a 2-0, with Marco Reus scoring twice. Despite this, a lucky Real advanced to the next round to face the favourites, Bayern Munich.
Madrid’s Christiano Ronaldo leads the scoring with 14 and will surely add to this tally, although all bets are off with regard to who will be the leading scorer by the end of the competition.
Chelsea defeated Galatasaray 3-1 following a 1-1 draw away and a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge. Jose Mourinho’s side were ‘being written off’ according to Goal.com, prior to their ties against Paris Saint-Germain having been priced at relatively long odds of 20/1. Having defeated the French champions 3-3 on aggregate (with the away goal advantage). Having reached the semi-finals, the Blues are third favourite of the four teams remaining to win the competition, placed at 9/2 by Paddy Power to win the competition.
Having destroyed AC Milan 5-1 on aggregate in Round 16 and eliminated compatriots Barcelona 2-1 on aggregate in the quarter final, Atletico go into their tie with Chelsea as underdogs in their bid to progress to the final, priced at 10/11 to be eliminated. Despite this, their wins against Milan and Barcelona show that they should in no way be underestimated.
Seeing how Atletico dispatched with Messi-wielding Barcelona, I predict that Atletico Madrid will go through to the final – in fact, the odds are decent considering their form. I think Diego Costa will score two goals and that the Spanish team will defeat Chelsea 2-0.
I also predict that Bayern Munich will put paid to an all-Spanish final and progress, before defeating Atletico 3-2.
