Arsenal shareholder: Özil needs to improve

Influential shareholder Alisher Usmanov shared his thoughts on Mesut Özil.

Özil, signed from Real Madrid in the summer, missed a penalty in Wednesday night’s 2-0 Champions League defeat at home to reigning champions Bayern Munich. He has been in a slump for many weeks, with many fans tipping the Gunners’ record signing for an extended period on the bench.

Alisher Usmanov, an influential Arsenal hareholder, believes the German can do more: “What do I think about Özil’s performance? My view – Less than his capacity. Why was that? Maybe he was tired.”

Mathieu Flamini did not think much of Özil during Wednesday night’s defeat, verbally remonstrating with the German after a corner. Meanwhile, following boos and Twitter abuse, Lukas Podolski came to his team-mates defence: ‘He’s an outstanding player who wants to make all of us happy in the future,’ he added. ‘A missed penalty won’t change that.’
