Latest news: Mata deal agreed in principle, Rooney and Courtois may move

By on January 21, 2014

Juan Mata appears set to be the subject of a £40m bid from Manchester United, with many British newspapers suggesting that a deal is already agreed in priciple. The former Valencia man joined the Blues in 2011 for £23.5m & has been somewhat of a fringe players since Mourinho’s arrival.

Mata, 25, was Chelsea’s back-to-back player of the season in his first two seasons. He provided the assist for the winning goal in the 2013 Europa League Final & the assist for Chelsea’s most famous goal – Didier Drogba’s powerful header past Manuel Neuer in the 2012 Champions League Final. Now, he’s likely to join Manchester United in a £40m deal. Remarkable.

Wayne Rooney is reportedly a £25m target for Real Madrid in the summer as his contract expires in 2015. David Moyes said in December 2013: “He is actually on the verge of being one of the great legends at this club”. It appears that Rooney does not want to enter contract talks and, rather than letting his contract run down, United may accept a large transfer bid in the summer.

The 28-year old England international has been in fine form for Manchester United, despite the club’s struggles in the Premier League under Moyes. Rooney may find himself in sunny Spain post-World Cup.

Another Chelsea star may be on the move: Thibaut Courtois, Chelsea’s future replacement for Petr Cech, who has yet to star for the Blues, will be the subject of a big-money move in the summer according to Atletico boss Diego Simeone.

The Belgian sensation has been on loan at Atletico since his move from Genk in 2011. Asked if he would spend €26m (£20m) to keep hold of Courtois, manager Diego Simeone said: “Definitely”.

Mo’ players, mo’ problems for Chelsea.
