Mourinho set to decide Chelsea future of Terry, Lampard and Cole

Roman Abramovich has given Jose Mourinho the ultimate power to decide whether veteran players deserve new contracts at Chelsea.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Mourinho will decide the futures of John Terry, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole. Abramovich is placing full trust in his popular manager to oversee the transition of the future squad and make football judgments about the future of key players – the Russian has drawn criticism for a lack of trust with previous managers. Mourinho, clearly, the exception to the rule.

Lampard and Terry have been big parts of Mourinho’s modern Chelsea & Terry has been especially good form since Jose’s return. They will both likely stay beyond the end of the season. Ashley Cole, however, may move on. Cesar Azpilicueta – a right-back – has been preferred to Cole during the Premier League season. Form aside, that says a lot about Mourinho’s opinion of Ashley Cole.

Mourinho has raised the stakes of his pursuit of Manchester City this season in the Premier League: “It would be my greatest achievement if we beat them to the title this year,” said the Portuguese manager. “It’s not about having quality players, other clubs also have quality. But Man City are in the perfect moment. In another dimension. The number of players they have at the same level is amazing.”
