Which Liverpool Legend Is Firmly Set In Mourinho’s Transfer Sights?
Jose Mourinho has reportedly set his sights on former Liverpool midfielder and current Real Madrid star Xabi Alonso for a free transfer this January.
The defensive midfielder’s contract runs out this June, and Mourinho is keen to bring his former player to Stamford Bridge.
Alonso signed for Real Madrid from Liverpool in 2009 for £30m and has been an ever-present in the Bernabeu midfield ever since.
Real Madrid are reportedly confident that they will convince the player to sign another contract, but it remains to be seen whether or not Alonso himself might prefer a move back to the Premier League to link up with his former boss to end his career.
Alonso is apparently not keen on a move back to Anfield, as he sees his time there as finished. However, when Chelsea played Real Madrid in a friendly this summer, Mourinho and Alonso were pictured deep in conversation, happily chatting and embracing.
However, Alonso does have a relatively deep-seeded rivalry with Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard that would have to be resolved before a move could be completed. Lampard was involved in a challenge that resulted in Alonso’s broken ankle in 2005.
Lampard said, ” I felt very bad and phoned to apologise but he wouldn’t really have it and ever since he has that look in his eye when we meet, and there is always a bit of jostling and shoving.”
Regardless, Alonso appears to remain high on Jose Mourinho’s January wish-list.
