Revealed: How Real Madrid missed out on Neymar in 2006
Barcelona signed the slim Brazilian Neymar this summer for £50m, but it could have been so different.
Spanish newspaper AS reveal that Neymar was on Real Madrid’s books in March of 2006, and was registered with the Spanish giants for a short period after a successful trial.
Real Madrid technical secretary Ramon Martinez is believed to be behind the move; however, CEO Carlos Martinez de Albornoz was not willing to pay the £50k fee for the 14-year-old youngster.
Just seven years later, Barcelona paid 1,000 times that quoted fee for the Brazilian super star. Real Madrid’s former sporting director Alberto Giraldez suggests it was a “historic mistake”.
