Worrying: Arsene Wenger confident of new Arsenal signings, despite missing out on every summer transfer target
You’ve got to applaud Wenger’s insistence that Arsenal will continue to be active in the transfer market. So far? Nothing.
Arsenal’s summer targets have included: Real Madrid’s Gonzalo Higuain earlier in the summer, Liverpool striker Luis Suarez who appears set to stay at Anfield and Bayern Munich’s midfielder Luiz Gustavo who looks set to stay in the Bundesliga. None have joined, while rivals have strengthened significantly
As the transfer window September 2 deadline looms, Wenger told Arsenal Player: “We are active. We are in a situation like Manchester United, like Chelsea, where everybody expects signings and at the moment not a lot has happened.”
Manchester United, certainly, have struggled to sign players despite hunting the likes of Thiago Alcantara and Cesc Fabregas. Chelsea, meanwhile, have been active in the market. The likes of Andre Schurrle, Marco Van Ginkel and De Bruyne / Lukaku get to make their mark on the Chelsea squad for the first time.
Even Arsenal’s neighbours Spurs have done well. Paulinho, Nacer Chadli, Etienne Capoue & Roberto Soldado would have offered Arsenal more on the pitch than their full coffers. Time is ticking away, Arsene.
