The England international, out of contract at the end of the season, is free to negotiate a contract with clubs outside the Premier League. Walcott, 23, has been in fine form for Arsenal scoring 14 goals so far – his most prolific yet.

With plenty of potential suitors for the pacey winger/centre-forward, Arsene Wenger is keen to avoid a repeat of the trend that has plagued the Gunners; top talent has often held the club for ransom and avoided signing contract extensions.

Theo Walcott is set to sign a £90,000-a-week deal with an enormous signing-on bonus, thought to be worth around £3m. The Guardian report that Arsenal are confident of securing Walcott’s future by next week.

While this potential deal represents a substantial financial windfall, Walcott has repeatedly insisted that his concerns are not purely surrounding wages. The direction of a club that have lost more top stars in recent years, notably Robin Van Persie to Manchester United in the summer, and the future role of Walcott in the side is of paramount importance.

It has been suggested that Arsene Wenger will hand Walcott the striker role vs Manchester City as the 23-year old pushes to prove himself.
