Lionel Messi closes in on Gerd Muller’s record

Lionel Messi is set to beat former Germany forward Gerd Muller’s long-standing record for most professional goals in a calendar year.

The Argentina and Barcelona star needs only four goals from his last seven matches to beat Muller’s record of 85 goals set in 1972.

Barcelona face Alaves, Athletic Bilbao, Benfica, Raul Betis, Atletico Madrid, and Vallodolid before the end of 2012. Lionel Messi seems likely to beat Muller’s incredible record.
